Most acrylic and mixed media paintings are created on gallery-wrap canvas with edges that match the artwork or painted with a dark gray, and there is a wire on the back to use for hanging. The painting does not need to be framed, but is a personal option at your cost.
Unlike most paintings or inks done on canvas or paper, pastel paintings are delicate and need to be handled differently. They will most likely be mounted backer board, matting to be determined, and stored in a protective plastic resealable bag or framed with glass. Pricing will be customized, accordingly. If you choose to have your pastel painting shipped in a protective plastic cover it is advisable to have a professional framer remove the painting.
If you are framing it yourself you will need to exercise extreme caution and gently take it out of the bag being careful not to rub it against the cover. Removing the bag by carefully cutting it off is also an option. It is important to not touch the painting’s surface and for longevity to keep it protected under glass. If you take it to a framer who might ask you about “fixing” the pastel with a spray fixative, I would suggest you pass on that option, as it may darken or change the colors of the pastels.
All artwork is completed on archival paper or canvas, that may be framed or unframed. For work on paper, with or without a mat. It is a personal preference and I’ll be happy to talk to you about pros and cons. For pastel without a mat, “spacers” are used to keep the painting away from the glass. A good framer will know exactly how to do this.
